Known for its effect on the cardiovascular system, soothing muscle, bones, and joints, its restorative effects, and calming properties, Basil aids in increasing clarity of thought and maintaining an open mind. It is used to help with migraines caused by liver and gallbladder problems, mental fatigue, sometimes for menstrual periods, clearing breathing, and cooling affected areas of skin.
The Basil oil is extracted from the leaves, stems, and flowers through steam distillation. The herbaceous and licorice-like aroma blends well with Bergamot, Cypress, White Fir, Geranium, Helichrysum, Lavender, Lemongrass, Marjoram, Peppermint, and Wintergreen.
Anciently, Basil was used for many of the same issues as today: respiratory, digestive, kidney ailments, bites, fevers, malaria, or epidemics. One of the contradictions is it was used for epilepsy, which is not now recommended. The French use it for migraines associated with liver and gallbladder problems, scantry menstrual periods, and mental fatigue.
Avoid using Basil if you are pregnant or have epilepsy, or under the age of 6. Basil can be applied topically, although if you have sensitive skin, you will want to dilute it. Test on a small patch of skin for sensitivity. The most common areas to apply are the temples, top of nose, reflex points, and/or directly on affected area of concern. Of course, Basil can also be added to flavor food or water. If taken orally, dilute one drop in 120 mL of water or take with a capsule. Diffusing or directly inhaling the oil can also be effective.
